Das Bild eines Oktopusses weckt vielfältige Assoziationen, von alten Seefahrtsmythen bis zum Fußballorakel. Seit einigen Jahren ist es für viele sinnbildlich mit einem neuen Verhältnis von Mensch und Natur verknüpft. Das „tentakuläre Denken“ steht – im Gegensatz zur rationalen Wahrnehmung mit den Fernsinnen Auge und Ohr – für ein emphatisches Einfühlen in die Welt mit allen Teilen des Körpers. Einen großen Anteil an dieser Entwicklung trägt Donna Haraway, Naturwissenschaftlerin, Feministin und postmodern geprägt, die die hochintelligente Spezies in ihrem jüngsten Buch Unruhig Bleiben als neue Vorbilder beschreibt: Oktopoden sind fluide, kreative und queere Geschöpfe. Da sie früh von den Eltern getrennt werden, bewahren sie keine Traditionen im konservativen Sinne.

Für das Ruhr Ding: Schlaf setzt God’s Entertainment eine begehbare Raumskulptur, die unverkennbar an einen Oktopus erinnert, an den Saalbau, ein in den 1970er Jahren entstandenes terrassenförmig angelegtes Kulturzentrum für die Bewohner*innen der Stadt Witten. Dem Inneren des Gebäudes verleiht das Künstler*innenkollektiv die Anmutung eines Kreuzfahrtschiffes, inklusive Kabinenleben und einem Swimmingpools an Deck. Gleichzeitig ist jedes Detail der Installation eine präzise, künstlerische Setzung – und der Swimmingpool tatsächlich ein sehr schöner, handgewebter Teppich. Die Installation/Performance Cruise Tentare entsteht als Koproduktion von Urbane Künste Ruhr und dem Kulturforum Witten unter der Leitung von Jasmin Vogel.

Das ist eine Kreuzfahrt wie keine andere. Man merkt kaum, dass man sich auf einer Kreuzfahrt befindet. Der Begriff Cruise hat seinen Ursprung in dem niederländischen Wort kruiser (aus dem 17Jhd.), der ein kreuzendes Schiff, im Sinne von hin- und herfahrend, bezeichnete. In diesem Sinne sind Kreuzfahrten so etwas wie fahrende Diskurse, wenn unter Diskurs die Bewegung von Hin und Her verstanden wird, von Kommen und Gehen, von Schritten und Verwirklichungen. Die Koordinaten dieser zukunftsweisenden Kreuzfahrt bestimmen die Frage, wie Menschen und Nicht-Menschen in einer Welt von Morgen zusammenleben können. Der Kurs der Reise baut auf den Erkenntnissen der Koexistenz auf, die zeigen, wie wichtig es ist, die Gesamtheit der Akteur*innen in einer Netzwerkkonfiguration zu verorten, als Idee des "Mit-Machens" bzw. des „Mit-Reisens“. Das Ziel dieser fiktiven Reise mündet schließlich in der Skizzierung eines Modells für das artenübergreifende Zusammenleben. Wir fahren langsam, hin und her, weil wir weit kommen wollen. Und während wir reisen konzentrieren wir uns nicht so sehr auf das Ziel, sondern auf die Erfahrung der Reise selbst. Donna Haraway bekräftigt in „Unruhig bleiben“, welche Geschichten Geschichten erzählen, welche Konzepte Konzepte denken. Mathematisch, bildlich und erzählend ist es von Gewicht, welche Figuren Figuren figurieren, welche Systeme Systeme systematisieren. 

An Bord von Cruise Tentare reisen unter anderem Begriffe wie "Gesellschaft", "Bürgertum", "Tourismus", "Kultur" und "Luxus", die gemeinsam die Illusion eines Kreuzfahrtschiffes erzeugen. Im Kontext einer neuen kritischen Wertschätzung der gemeinsamen Körperlichkeit von Menschen und nicht-Menschen ist auch ein überlebensgroßer, aufblasbarer Oktopus mit an Bord. Der begehbare Oktopus, der Ko-Kapitän, ganz im Sinne von Donna Haraways vielseitigem und in viele Richtungen offenen, tentakulärem Denken, fordert uns aktiv heraus, über die Gegenwart und den Kurs der Zukunft zu reflektieren und unruhig zu bleiben.

The image of an octopus evokes a wide range of associations, from ancient seafaring myths to soccer oracles. For some years now, it has been symbolically linked for many with a new relationship between man and nature. In contrast to rational perception with the remote senses of eye and ear, "tentacular thinking" stands for an emphatic empathy with the world using all parts of the body. Donna Haraway, natural scientist, feminist and postmodernist, who describes the highly intelligent species as new role models in her latest book, Staying with the Trouble, has played a major role in this development: Octopods are fluid, creative and queer creatures. Because they are separated from their parents at an early age, they do not preserve traditions in the conservative sense.

For Ruhr Ding: Schlaf, God's Entertainment places a walk-in spatial sculpture, unmistakably reminiscent of an octopus, at the Saalbau, a terraced cultural center built in the 1970s for the residents* of the city of Witten. The artists' collective gives the interior of the building the appearance of a cruise ship, including cabin life and a swimming pool on deck. At the same time, every detail of the installation is a precise, artistic setting - and the swimming pool is actually a very beautiful, hand-woven carpet. The installation/performance Cruise Tentare is created as a co-production of Urbane Künste Ruhr and Kulturforum Witten under the direction of Jasmin Vogel.

This is a cruise like no other. You hardly notice that you are on a cruise. The term cruise has its origin in the Dutch word kruiser (from the 17th century), which meant a cruising ship, in the sense of going back and forth. In this sense, cruises are something like traveling discourses, if discourse is understood as the movement of back and forth, of coming and going, of steps and realizations. The coordinates of this forward-looking cruise determine the question of how humans and non-humans can live together in a world of tomorrow. The course of the voyage builds on the insights of coexistence, which show the importance of locating the totality of actors in a network configuration, as an idea of "doing with" or "traveling with." The goal of this fictional journey finally culminates in the sketching of a model for interspecies coexistence. We travel slowly, back and forth, because we want to go far. And as we travel, we focus not so much on the destination, but on the experience of the journey itself. Donna Haraway affirms in "Staying with the Trouble" what stories tell stories, what concepts think concepts. Mathematically, figuratively, and narratively, it matters which figures figure, which systems systematize systems. 

On board Cruise Tentare travels concepts such as "society," "bourgeoisie," "tourism," "culture," and "luxury," among others, which together create the illusion of a cruise ship. In the context of a new critical appreciation of the shared corporeality of humans and non-humans, a larger-than-life inflatable octopus is also on board. The walkable octopus, the co-captain, in keeping with Donna Haraway's multifaceted and multi-directional tentacular thinking, actively challenges us to reflect and remain restless about the present and the course of the future.
